CanHOPE Kuching: Support Group Activities 2023

In 2023, CanHOPE Kuching held a series of support group activities for its patients, survivors, and caregivers. The activities included DIY floral art, a baking workshop, and a beauty makeover event, among others.

CanHOPE is a non-profit organisation counselling and support service by Parkway Cancer Centre. The organisation has offices in more than 15 cities around the world, including Kuching. In 2023, CanHOPE Kuching organised a series of activities in support of cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.

DIY Floral Art

In March, the organisation collaborated with Pink Ribbon Support Group Sarawak to host a DIY Floral Art event that aimed to enhance participants’ self-esteem and social interactions through creative expression and accomplishment.

Participants created beautiful flower arrangements in support of breast cancer survivors and patients. The floral arrangements were thoughtfully framed and participants could bring it home as a heartwarming memento of what transpired that joyous morning.

Look Good, Feel Confident

Later that year, CanHOPE Kuching worked with Maison Monica Hair & Beauty Academy to organise a makeover event for cancer patients and survivors. The event was aimed to boost the confidence of the participants by providing personalised guidance on hairstyling and makeup application.

Participants were able to learn a lot of practical tips that can help ease their transition back into a normal routine and lifestyle. This can help with their self esteem and confidence, especially after facing appearance-related side effects during and after cancer treatment.

Pink Ribbon Support Group

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, CanHOPE Kuching organised an event that aimed to promote the well-being of women in the fight against breast cancer. This initiative sought to provide support, raise awareness, and foster a sense of community among individuals affected by breast cancer.

The heartwarming event allowed participants to not only share their experiences but also gain valuable insights from one another. Participants had a very fruitful sharing session, fostering connections as many bonded over shared challenges.

Hands-on Baking Workshop

In November, the organisation collaborated with Amy Cake Decorating & Cooking Institute and hosted a Baking Workshop to impart invaluable baking skills to the 12 participants. The workshop also aimed to connect participants with one another so that they can support and empower each other.

During the workshop, the instructor gave a live demonstration before the participants set off to make their own egg tarts. The workstations were abuzz with activity as the participants worked in their groups to meticulously craft the tart shells.

After the workshop, participants went home happily with their handmade tarts, a certificate of participation, and a thoughtful goodie bag that had CanHOPE brochures, Cancer Care handbooks, Expat Living magazines, and PCC cancer pamphlets.

CanHOPE: a true pillar of support

The CanHOPE Kuching Support Group Activities in 2023 encapsulated a significant chapter of shared support, resilience, and empowerment. Through a myriad of carefully curated activities, participants managed to forge connections and gain confidence in the face of the disease.

CanHOPE hopes to persist in its mission to provide unwavering support in 2024 and for many years to come.
