Combat Sarcopenia with Exercises

Often exacerbated by cancer, the debilitating condition can impede cancer treatment but is manageable through resistance-based exercise training.

In Singapore, sarcopenia can be screened through the strength, assistance with walking, rising from a chair, climbing stairs and falls (SARC-F) questionnaire, followed by a simple functional test known as the repeated chair stand test. This involves an individual attempting to stand up from a seated position five times without using their arms for support. Taking longer than 10 seconds to complete this task may signify sarcopenia and is recommended for further assessment.

Fortunately, sarcopenia can be intervened through resistance-based exercise training. The following workouts1 are some examples for regaining mobility and strength:

basic squats

kneeling push ups

lunges

biceps curls

crunches

By integrating resistance-based exercises into their daily routine, individuals battling sarcopenia can significantly improve their quality of life and better manage their condition. Always consult with your doctor or physiotherapist before starting any exercise.
