Celebrating 18 Years of Hope and Healing

As 2024 draws to a close, Parkway Cancer Centre (PCC) looks back on a meaningful year of events marking its 18th anniversary, with a focus on raising cancer awareness, sharing strength and building lasting friendships.

PCC Charity Art Jamming

24 February 2024

Though often overlooked in everyday life, images of landscapes, flowers and wildlife hold deep meaning for cancer patients and their caregivers, symbolising hope, resilience and renewal. More than just a workshop, the PCC Charity Art Jamming offered participants the chance to express these emotions, transforming art into a powerful tool for healing and connection.

In support of the Singapore Cancer Society, the event drew 57 participants, including patients, loved ones and community members. Dr Khoo Kei Siong, Deputy Medical Director and Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist at PCC, highlighted how art can help cancer patients explore their inner strength and reassess their priorities. “Art can be instrumental in that self-discovery,” he noted.

Embracing the theme 'Strength, Hope, and Vitality', participants found joy in expressing their creativity together, exploring colours and techniques under the guidance of trainers. At the session's close, each painting was photographed for an online contest, with the top 12 entries set to appear in PCC’s 2025 calendar — a tribute to the strength and unity cultivated through art.

Survivors Connect

6 July 2024

This full-day event brought together a community of survivors, patients and caregivers for an inspiring celebration filled with stories, self-care insights and healing art.

PCC cancer survivors shared their experiences, illustrating how they maintained hope and embraced a renewed outlook during recovery. The event also featured speakers who offered practical advice on self-care, nutrition and mental well-being, reinforcing the importance of holistic health.

Between talks, participants bonded through activities like the Kokedama workshop, where they created Japanese plant art that symbolised growth and resilience. A Resistance Band Workout demonstration encouraged them to embrace physical activity as part of their healing process.

These shared moments allowed participants to connect deeply, offering each other encouragement and friendship. By the end of the day, many left with a renewed sense of belonging and hope.

IHH Singapore Sea Regatta

14 & 15 September 2024

Sponsored by IHH Healthcare Singapore, of which PCC is a part, the inaugural IHH Singapore Sea Regatta, held at the Singapore Sports Hub’s Water Sports Centre, offered more than just competition; it brought teams together with a shared purpose — raising breast cancer awareness and promoting active ageing.

PCC hosted a booth distributing brochures on breast cancer, healthy recipes and guidance for starting a healing journey. Passersby were encouraged to subscribe to HealthNews, a free publication featuring inspiring stories on wellness and cancer care. Subscribers could also participate in a 'Grab & Win' game and win gifts, such as stress balls, coasters, plush toys and water bottles. A photo booth added extra fun, allowing attendees to capture memories of this event.

Charity Flower Frame Workshop & Afternoon Tea

28 September 2024

Sixty-five participants sealed precious memories in personalised pink photo frames at this two-hour guided workshop and breast cancer awareness charity event.

In her opening remarks, Dr Wong Chiung Ing, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at PCC, highlighted the importance of breast health awareness, noting that breast cancer affects many women in Singapore, including younger ones. She encouraged women to perform monthly self-examinations and to consider regular screenings, emphasising that early detection greatly improves the chances of successful treatment.

After the hands-on craft session, participants compared their creations, took photos and enjoyed light refreshments. The event was filled with laughter and positive energy as everyone embraced the project, turning the simple act of creating into a celebration of community and connection. All proceeds from the event went to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

PCC 18th Anniversary

25 October 2024

PCC staff gathered at the Plume Ballroom, Singapore Flyer, to mark the centre's 18th anniversary with an evening of appreciation and camaraderie. In line with the theme, 'All That Glitters Is Gold', attendees enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere, complete with dinner, music and an engaging magic show.

Dr Ang Peng Tiam, Medical Director and Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at PCC, opened the event by expressing his gratitude to the team. “We are fortunate to have 18 years of friendship,” Dr Ang said. “This is a time for celebration. It’s an opportunity to thank each of you for the exceptional care you provide to our patients — because that’s what truly matters.”

A professional photographer captured memorable moments, including a group photo of PCC staff against the Singapore skyline — a memento symbolising the unity and shared purpose of the PCC family.

As PCC celebrates 18 years of innovation, resilience and teamwork, it is clear that this journey has been about more than just milestones. It has been about the friendships built, the strength shared and the community created along the way. Looking back on these achievements, PCC moves forward with a renewed commitment to the future, fuelled by the passion, dedication and unity that have brought it this far. Here’s to many more years of shared strength, hope and friendship!
